Reaction On Devil In Drag

Yesterday, we were introduced to the physical theatre play: The Devil In Drag.

Warm up.

We begun with a group warm up which warmed up most parts of our body so that we'd be ready to act; we did many things like stretching, crouching, balancing of different parts of our bodies.

Voice warm up.

To warm up our voices, we repeated sounds of 9 short breaths and then, with the rest of the breath we had left in us, we dropped to the floor and shook out any last breaths.

Body Tennis.

In the body tennis exercise, we each had a sound which we also showed through our bodies and we passed it to eachother to repeat it and then show our sound. This showed how to respond to other characters' lines of dialogue in a play.

Fisherman and fish.

We played a game where there were 2 sides of people, fishermen and fish, and the fishermen had to show how tough it was to reel the fish in and the fish had a body part, that they were going to be reeled in by, and they had to make it look believable.

Create characters from different parts of body. - Nose, Chin, Chest, Bum, Knees.

We had to walk around the room creating characters by walking with either their nose, chin, knees, chest or bum. This showed us how leading with different body parts impacted on the character's status and personality; for example, leading with your nose made the character of a higher status who may be a bit snobbish.

Piece of text to respond to - Improvising scene.

We were given a text to read which would then be used as a stimulus for an improvised scene. In the text my group was given, there was the word 'sex-pot' so we used 'sex-pot' and 'pot' to make a scene about prostitutes and drug dealers; we used our characters from the last excercise in the scene.

Saw a synopsis.

We then saw a synopsis of the play to introduce us to the play that we'd be studying for the next 2 terms; this gave us a small 'taste' of what we'd be studying.
